Water chemistry and greenhouse gas emissions of UK water bodies, 2021-2022, from the LOCATE project

This dataset comprises water chemistry data for dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total dissolved nitrogen (TdN), total phosphorus (TP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), absorbance at 254nm (Abs 254), specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA), and dissolved CH4, CO2, N2O collected at sites across the UK in 2021 and 2022. Data were obtained via collection of water samples in situ, and concentrations were derived via subsequent sample processing and analysis. Floating gas collection chambers were deployed for 24 hours at selected sites to characterise diurnal greenhouse gas emissions from various types of inland water bodies and how these are affected by water body type and seasonality. These data were generated from the Land Ocean Carbon Transfer (LOCATE) project Full details about this dataset can be found at https://doi.org/10.5285/010fa679-71d8-4b5e-b2fd-2d2ce78d02ef

Statement

Sampling took place in July, August, and September of 2021. A subselection of sites were re-sampled in February and March of 2022 to ascertain seasonal variability. Samples were collected using a 60ml syringe and were either dispensed directly unfiltered or, filtered with a cellulose acetate filter into their relevant containers before being returned to the lab and either frozen or refrigerated before analysis. Dissolved greenhouse gas samples were collected using the headspace method. This involves filling a 60ml syringe with 30ml of stream water and 30ml of ambient air and agitating it for one minute until equilibration of gases has occurred. The air sample is then injected into a sealed vial and returned to the lab for analysis. All data were generated by the authors. During the generation of water chemistry data, calibration standards of known concentrations were used for quality control of instrument outputs.
