Following the manufacturer instructions, access tubes were inserted in the soil using an augering kit to minimize disruption in the structure of the soil profile. The access tubes were initially placed as deep as thaw depth allowed and further inserted deeper as the active layer thickened. At time of measurement, the PR2 profile probe was connected to the reading meter, removed from the protective tube and inserted in the access tubes. Values of volumetric soil moisture (m3 m-3) were recorded from the meter using the default calibration.
