Soil samples were taken from between 5 and 10cm in depth from transects across the reserve and from under oak trees. pH was measured by the Woodlands Research Section at The Nature Conservancy's Merlewood Research Station, Grange over Sands, Cumbria and the data have been stored and digitised by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, Lancaster. In 1961, routine soil pH was measured by the Woodlands Research Section at The Nature Conservancy's Merlewood Research Station, Grange over Sands. The original paper map has been latterly stored at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, Lancaster (a descendant organisation of The Nature Conservancy), and the points and values digitised using ESRI's ArcMap software. Points were recorded on an original map at a scale of 1:25 000 which had been enlarged. The exact spatial accuracy is not known but points are likely to be accurate to within less than 50m.
