Statement

Data have been collected by Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) staff on the May National Nature Reserve, Scotland (5611’N, 0233’W) using standardised methods since 1987, and this work has continued to the present as part of the Isle of May Long-term Study (IMLOTS; https://www.ceh.ac.uk/our-science/projects/isle-may-long-term-study). As part of the Isle of May Long-term Study, global location sensing (GLS) devices are regularly deployed and retrieved. From GLS data collected during the 2016-2017 annual cycle, we derived daily data on guillemot foraging activity (hours spent foraging), sea surface temperature values (SST; recorded by the bird-borne loggers), energy expenditure, location fixes and the number of daylight hours. Data on bird mass were obtained by weighing the birds with a Pesola spring balance at logger development and retrieval. The full methodology is available in the Supporting Information document attached to this record.
