Bias-corrected temperature and precipitation data from the WRF regional climate model output, Cordillera Blanca and Vilcanota-Urubamba regions, Peru, from 1980 to 2018

Temperature and precipitation data from the Weather Research and Forecasting model are bias-corrected against observations to create these bias-corrected gridded datasets over the Rio Santa River Basin (in the Cordillera Blanca) at 4 km horizontal resolution (d02), the Vilcanota-Urubamba region at 4 km horizontal resolution (d03) and the upper region of the Rio Santa River Basin at 800 m horizontal resolution (d04). The raw WRF data can be found in the related dataset. Full details of the bias-correction can be found in Fyffe et al., (2021). These data were corrected as part of the PEGASUS (Producing EnerGy and preventing hAzards from SUrface water Storage in Peru) and Peru GROWS (Peruvian Glacier Retreat and its Impact on Water Security) projects. The datasets were created to assess past climate in the Peruvian Andes, as a basis to determine future climate in the region, and as an input for glaciological and hydrological models. The data were created using the British Antarctic Survey high performance computer.

The creation of this data was conducted under the Peru GROWS and PEGASUS projects, which were both funded by NERC (grants NE/S013296/1 and NE/S013318/1, respectively) and CONCYTEC through the Newton-Paulet Fund. The Peruvian part of the Peru GROWS project was conducted within the framework of the call E031-2018-01-NERC "Glacier Research Circles", through its executing unit FONDECYT (Contract No. 08-2019-FONDECYT).

Statement

Methodology:

The bias correction was carried out linearly for both minimum and maximum daily temperature, and daily precipitation. The WRF data were corrected using observations from 35 (35) precipitation and 26 (34) temperature stations around the Rio Santa (Vilcanota-Urubamba). Observational data was cleaned before use. Details of the bias-correction can be found in Potter et al., (2023) and the supplementary table S1 from Fyffe et al., (2021).

For precipitation, the number of wet days is corrected by selecting a threshold for daily precipitation (which varies for each month of the year), theta, below which the model precipitation is set to 0 for that day. The magnitude of precipitation is then corrected using P_corrected = a P_rawWDC where P_corrected is the corrected model precipitation and P_rawWDC is the raw model output with the number of wet days corrected, and a is a constant which varies for each month of the year. The values of theta and a are calculated for each station.

For minimum and maximum daily temperature, the formula used is T_corrected = T_raw + a, where T_corrected is the bias-corrected minimum or maximum temperature, T_raw the raw model minimum or maximum temperature adjusted to the observation height, and a is a constant which varies for each month of the year and calculated for each station.

The hourly temperature is calculated by scaling the raw WRF output to the bias-corrected minimum and maximum daily temperatures.

Data collection:

Data were produced using WRF V3.8.1 and bias-corrected using station data from SENHAMI, ANA, CIAD, MINERA ANTAMINA and UNSAAC.

Data quality:

There are no known quality issues with the data.
