Herbivory occurrence and intensity of Clidemia hirta and native Melastoma plants in oil palm-dominated landscapes containing embedded rainforest remnants, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, 2019

This dataset contains measurements of herbivory occurrence and herbivory intensity within 21 oil palm dominated sites in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Within each site, herbivory measurements were recorded for Clidemia hirta and Melastoma spp. plants along two 100m transects, one at the forest-oil palm edge and the other in disturbed forest. In addition to herbivory measurement data, the dataset contains measurements of the number of reproductive organs, local density of C. hirta plants and local canopy cover. These data were collected in order to examine evidence for the roles of natural enemy release and biotic resistance in invasion of C. hirta within agricultural landscapes of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, where C. hirta co-occurs with native species of Melastomataceae. Statement

Field surveys were conducted in February – April 2019. The 21 sites were all in Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil-certified oil palm plantations. Rainforest remnants, where the forest transects were conducted, were mostly isolated forest fragments (n=15 sites) and six sites were connected to larger tracts of forest reserves outside the oil palm plantation boundary. At each site, C.hirta plants were surveyed along two 100 m transects, at the forest-oil palm edge (n=21) and in disturbed forest (n=19). In one site the forest interior was not accessible, so a disturbed forest transect was not completed, and in another site, there were no suitable C. hirta inside the forest to survey. Within each transect, up to ten C. hirta plants were surveyed for measures of herbivory, and for each C. hirta plant surveyed, the nearest native Melastoma individual, if present, was also surveyed for herbivory. We recorded two measures of herbivory: herbivory occurrence (the proportion of leaves that had sustained herbivore damage) and intensity (percentage of leaf area removed). The dataset also includes measurements of number of reproductive organs for both C. hirta and Melastoma spp, the density of C. hirta along the transect and forest structure (e.g. canopy cover).
