TS05 and TS07 external magnetic field model L*, LCDS and B field data for the GOES-13, GOES-15 and HIMAWARI-8 satellites for three geomagnetic storm periods

The dataset contains satellite L* values, last closed drift shell (LCDS) model locations and model magnetic field values for three two day periods covering three different magnetic storms. The periods covered are 27-28 February 2014, 22-23 June 2015 and 14-15 December 2015. The L* values are calculated for electrons with a pitch angle of 90 degrees at the locations of the GOES-13, GOES-15 and HIMAWARI-8 geostationary satellites, using the IRBEM library with the TS05 and TS07 external magnetic field models. Magnetic field values from the models are also included for the GOES-13 satellite during the June 2015 event. LCDS values for each of the periods are included, with two LCDS models based on the TS05 and TS07 field models, and a third LCDS model based particle tracing simulations.

Statement

Methodology:

The L* and magnetic field values from the TS05 and TS07 models were calculated using the spacepy distribution of IRBEM, accessed via https://github.com/spacepy/spacepy. The calculations were performed using the IGRF internal field model, and a resolution setting of 6. The GOES satellite locations were taken from NOAA at https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/stp/satellite/goes/index.html. Data from the Himawari-8 satellite were provided by the NICT HIMAWARI/SEDA database at https://aer-nc-web.nict.go.jp/himawari-seda/ .

The LCDS values were calculated using IRBEM with the same settings as the L* values, and were determined by finding via binary search the highest altitude along the Geocentric Solar Magnetospheric (GSM) x axis at which a valid L* could be calculated for a 90 degree particle at the magnetic equator.

Data collection:

All LCDS, L* and magnetic field values were calculated using the spacepy distribution of IRBEM, version 0.3.0, accessed via https://github.com/spacepy/spacepy.

Data quality:

NaN values in the L* data represent times when IRBEM was unable to determine an L* value at the satellite location. NaN values in the LCDS data represent times when the binary search for the highest L* failed to converge within 20 steps.
