Suspended Solids

The data displaying Suspended Solids is derived from the Environment Agency’s Water Quality Archive.

The WIMS determinand is “Solids, Suspended at 105 C” (WIMS determinand code 0135), unit: mg/L.

The extreme range of factors influencing SS and variability in time makes it difficult to derive standards that can be used helpfully and generally in the classification of water bodies. In most situations, a total suspended solids concentration below 20 mg/L appears clear, while levels over 40 mg/L may begin to appear cloudy.

An annual mean of 25 mg/l of suspended solids is used as the Guideline Standard by environment agencies to help set controls on more or less continuous discharges of suspended solids to waters.

The available data are extracted for the area of ‘Hertfordshire and North London’ and ‘Kent and South London’. Newly published data are incorporated into the WQE as they become available. Data from all freshwater river sample points collected for the purpose of “environmental monitoring statutory (EU directives)” (purpose code “MS”) with monitoring of selected determinands (substances) were used in the analysis.
