UK Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) Ambient Noise dataset from RAF Sonobuoys (1988-2009)

A set of underwater noise observations which provide information on noise levels over an 21 year period potentially setting a base line for future environmental monitoring. The data were collected for military operations by RAF Nimrod aircraft using air-deployed sonobuoys. They consist of averaged noise levels, measured in db, at a range of frequencies and depths throughout the UK Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

    The data was collected by sonobuoys launched from RAF Nimrod Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA). Data is transmitted from the buoy and recorded onboard the aircraft. The values data-based are as recorded (at various depths) by the sensor and no further quality control has been completed. The data was collected for operational

    military purposes and as such does not constitute a scientifically assembled dataset.
