Time-series physical and chemical transports through the Rockall Trough (2014-2018)

The dataset comprises monthly-averaged transport time-series through the Rockall Trough between 15 August 2014 and 15 June 2018 for the following variables: volume, temperature, salt, nitrate, phosphate, silicate, dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity. Transport fields were created from OSNAP moored CTD data and volume transport has been calculated by the OSNAP project ( https://www.o-snap.org/). Calibration and analysis was carried out as follows: Moored time-series (temperature, salinity, and pressure) were calibrated using standard cal-dip protocol; Section CTD data were calibrated using bottle samples; Water samples were analysed for dissolved inorganic nutrients, dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity; Multiple linear regression equations were derived using data from the AR30-04 cruise in July 2018 (R/V Armstrong, 1st-30th July 2018) - these link dissolved inorganic nutrients / dissolved inorganic carbon / total alkalinity and temperature, salinity and pressure. Multiple linear regression equations were applied to calibrated moored time-series to calculate derived time-series of dissolved inorganic nutrients, dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity. Time-series were low-pass filtered to remove tidal oscillations, interpolated onto 12-hourly time-steps, and a regular pressure grid. Volume transports were calculated from moored CTD and current meter records. Nutrient and carbon transports were calculate by multiplying volume transports by derived moored nutrient and carbon fields. Temperature transports were calculated by multiplying volume transports, by interpolated moored temperature fields, and by potential density, and specific heat of seawater. Salt transports were calculated by multiplying volume transports by interpolated moored salinity fields. The dataset is a contribution to the EU-funded ATLAS project ( https://www.eu-atlas.org/).

Title

COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No 1089/2010 of 23 November 2010 implementing Directive 2007/2/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards interoperability of spatial data sets and services

Explanation

BODC protocols are based on the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model enabling BODC to iterate towards compliance with the on-going evolution and development of community requirements including FAIR (Findable,Accessible,Interoperable,Reusable), TRUST (Transparency, Responsibility, User community, Sustainability, Technology) and CARE (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics). Data managers quality assure submissions and assemble the metadata necessary for curation. Submissions (as received) are placed in a long-term accession and stored in triplicate across multiple sites. Appropriate data are transferred into a standard internal format with source variable names mapped to controlled vocabularies, documentation assembled, and metadata loaded into BODC databases. Access to these data is through direct request, the BODC website and through partner repositories such as SeaDataNet. Access control is attained by assigning a data policy to each set of data and this policy is used to administer access when data are requested. Discovery metadata is aligned with EU INSPIRE (through MEDIN) and SeaDataNet community standards. Data are converted to open community formats including Ocean Data View ASCII and SeaDataNet NetCDF, with data described using terms from the NERC vocabulary server. BODC submission agreements are documented on the BODC website and customer service is assured with a dedicated requests team that serve data following local regulations including General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2018 and Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) 2004.

Statement

This dataset was created by scientists at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) as a contribution to the EU ATLAS project. The underlying observational data were originally collected and processed as part of the OSNAP programme. The data were ultimately transferred to the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC), via the EU EMODnet Data Ingestion portal. They are held at BODC for long term archive and distribution in their original format.Instrument(s) used to collect data: CTD; current meters.
