The tailings were then fully saturated with 203 L of 0.5 M citric acid solution. Each experiment was conducted over a period of 150 days. Three pairs of anode and cathode electrodes were installed at equal spacing within the tailings matrix. At the end of the experiment, tailings samples were collected at different depths (0, 25cm, and 50 cm). Samples were labelled sequentially (1 to12), representing positions at the same depth from near the anode to near the cathode across the three electrode pairs. Metal concentrations in the treated tailings were determined using four-acid digestion (ISO 14869-1) followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Each subsample was analysed in triplicate.
