BGS Directory of Mines and Quarries

This edition of the Directory contains information on operational mineral sites in the UK during the period 2013–2014. Details of minerals produced or handled, geological formations worked, location and operator contact information are provided. These can be used for many purposes and are listed in a convenient form, firstly by Commodity (e.g. Natural Gas, Sandstone and Limestone), then by Mineral Planning Authority, and thirdly by Operator (where known).

Purpose

Importance of former workings for waste disposal, amenity and nature conservation, but also driven by the requirement of central government to assist with the preparation of mineral planning policy and in the calculation of the amounts of aggregates being produced across the country. With a further emphasis being placed on resources, there was a need to know where extraction had occurred in the past, and therefore where resources were depleted.
