Worker genotypes were determined from individuals sampled across an agricultural landscape and queen genotypes were reconstructed from sampled worker offspring. The program COLONY v.2.0 was used to assign workers to full-sib groups (with a genotyping error rate of 0-5% based on results of re-genotyping 10% of randomly selected individuals and scoring errors) and to reconstruct the multilocus genotypes of the mother queens. Data were checked for errors at all stages by staff at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and at the Institute of Zoology.
