High resolution vector polygons of Antarctic rock outcrop - VERSION 7.11

High resolution dataset of rock outcrop in Antarctica. Data have been prepared from various map and remotely sensed datasets ranging from the 1960s to 2025. A significant part of the data was compiled in 1993, and the quality and accuracy are uncertain. The automatically extracted rock outcrop layer provides a more accurate dataset in most locations.

Changes in v7.11 include new data for the area between 20degW and 80degW and as far south as 82degS. sourcedate and revdate attributes were updated to a consistent YYYY-MM-DD format. To indicate limited date precision for earlier records, sourceprec and revprec attributes were introduced.

Data compiled, managed and distributed by the Mapping and Geographic Information Centre and the UK Polar Data Centre, British Antarctic Survey on behalf of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research.

Statement

Methodology:

Data compiled from various mapping and remote sensing sources. Exact data sources are currently missing from the attribute table for a significant part of the data - the majority was compiled in 1993 and digitized from the USGS 1:250k reconnaissance series maps dating from the 1960s to 1990s, and DOS 1:250k series maps dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Exact data sources can be provided upon request in the format of vector lines.

The data newly added for the v7.11 release (the area between 20degW and 80degW and as far south as 82degS, except for South Orkney Islands, north of Clarence Island, Deception, Seymour, and Cockburn Islands, and Rothera Point) was automatically generated from Sentinel-2 mosaic of images, captured during 2024/2025 Antarctic season, using ResNet18 with Sentinel-2 RGB MOCO weights. The exact source with the corresponding sourcedate attribute can be found in the attribute table of the dataset. Additionally, the sourceprec field, identifying source time precision (day, month, or year), is provided. The revdate field with the corresponding revprec attribute identifies the date of data revision.

Please note: due to the versioning of the ADD, there are no versions 7.4-7.9 for this specific dataset.
