Active source seismic survey from the southern sector of Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctic Peninsula, December 2022

This active source seismic survey was acquired at JP-21 (-68.008614degN, -64.367714degE) on Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctic Peninsula in December 2022. The active-source reflection seismic data were acquired with a spread of 48 vertical component geophones of 100 Hz with a sledgehammer impacting a thick plastic plate. The geophones were placed at 2 m intervals, making the total spread length 94 m. Data were collected mid-way between individual geophones starting at off-end location -1 m and finishing at +95 m, thus totalling 49 shots along the spread. At least five hammer shots were acquired for each shot point. The seismic data were acquired to image the marine ice at the base of the Larsen C Ice Shelf in this suture zone, as part of the NERC-funded RiPIce (Rift Propagation for Ice sheet models) research project.

This project was funded by a NERC standard grant NE/T008016/1.

Statement

Methodology:

The active-source seismic data were acquired with a spread of 48 vertical component geophones of 100 Hz with a sledgehammer impacting a thick plastic plate. The geophones were placed at 2 m intervals, making the total spread length 94 m. Data were collected mid-way between individual geophones starting at off-end location -1 m and finishing at +95 m, thus totalling 49 shots along the spread. At least five hammer shots were acquired for each shot point.

First geophone (~0 m ) - 68.00938333 (lat), 64.37636667 (long)

Last geophone (~95 m) - 68.01018500 (lat), 64.36665000 (long)

Data collection:

The data were acquired using a 48 channel geode seismic system, with 100 Hz vertical component geophones using the acquisition software Seismodule controller.

Data quality:

Data recorded are a single shot (unstacked data).

The connection to geophone 34 did not work in the field, so trace 34 in all shot gathers is noisy and should be muted during processing.
