Scots pine-associated biodiversity in the UK (Scots pine Ecol)

This is a database of all known birds, bryophytes, fungi, invertebrates, lichens and mammals that use Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) in the UK. Scots pine is the UK’s only native conifer that is used commercially and is the most common tree in the UK’s native Caledonian pine woods. In total 1589 species are listed in the database. For each species a level of association with Scots pine is provided, ranging from obligate (only found on Scots pine) to cosmopolitan (found on a wide range of other tree species). Data on the ecology of each Scots pine associated species were collated: part of tree used, and use made of tree (feeding, roosting, breeding). Data on use or otherwise of 34 other tree species were also collated for each of the 1589 species. Statement

Existing data sources were collated during 2023/24, in order to identify as comprehensively as possible those species that use Scots Pine, Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine-associated species) and the nature of this association in the UK. The data sources included quality controlled databases of records of species, peer reviewed literature, published books and grey literature. A complete list of data sources used is provided together with an assessment of the quality of that data: peer reviewed or quality controlled dataset versus grey literature and whether the data are from the UK or not. Information on the species ecology and their use of 34 other tree species was also collated. The data were collated in a pre-defined standard format to enable consistency across taxa.
