Sentinel2 satellite imagery and derived geographic locations of emperor penguin colonies in the central and eastern Bellingshausen Sea between October and December, 2022

This dataset comprises Sentinel2 satellite imagery and derived geographic locations of five emperor penguin colonies located in the central and eastern Bellingshausen Sea, between October to December 2022. Medium-resolution satellite data was monitored for the presence of emperor penguin colonies, and when colonies were found, imagery was digitised and downloaded from Copernicus playground. Satellite data indicate early sea ice break-up at three of the four colonies, and the disappearance of the fourth colony.

Digitisation and annotation of satellite imagery was carried out by the British Antarctic Survey, and supported by NERC core funding and WWF grant NEB 2181.

Statement

Methodology:

Colony locations have been found by medium resolution satellite from over the last ten years. Selected sentinel2 satellite data was visualized and downloaded from Copernicus Sentinel playground as jpeg files. Selection was based on cloud cover and time of year (between October and late December 2022).

The shapefiles of colony locations were made by firstly locating colonies within the jpeg digitised imagery, and subsequently retrieving their geographic coordinates by using Antarctic coastline data from the Antarctic Digital Database and freely available satellite mosaics from ESRI WORLD IMAGERY.

No populations or size estimates were made from this imagery.

Data collection:

Copernicus Sentinel2 visualized using Sentinel Playground

ArcGIS desktop 10.6 (ESRI 2023)

Data quality:

Quality of the count data should be regarded as approximate as the methodology of counting numbers of birds from VHR imagery is unproven and although counters get agreement within 5-20 percentage any bias to as yet untested. See related paper.

The following jpeg's imagery is only partially loaded. This has not affected the quality of the dataset and associated locations of emperor penguin colonies.
