Invertebrate fossil occurrences from the Cretaceous Lopez de Bertodano Formation (Maastrichtian), Seymour Island, housed in the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI), Ithaca, NY

This dataset contains fossil occurrence data from the Cretaceous Lopez de Bertodano Formation (Maastrichtian), on Seymour Island, compiled in August 2022. Fossils were collected by Carlos Macellari and William Zinsmeister over several field seasons in the 1980s, and are presently (since 2010) reposited in the Paleontological Research Institution, Ithaca, NY. Data in this spreadsheet are presented by locality (station number, as compiled by PRI), with fossils identified at the family level.

Statement

Methodology:

Data was compiled during a visit to the Paleontological Research Institution's Zinsmeister Collection in August 2022, where all specimens in the Maastrichtian López de Bertodano Formation (LBF) were counted. Specimens in the Zinsmeister Collection are identified to species level, as identified by the original fossil collectors. However due to subsequent changes in certain taxonomy, and some misidentification of specimens by the original collectors, all records in this dataset were coarsened to Family level identifications. Data is presented by PRI's station number, and the geographic coordinates of each station is provided. The LBF is informally divided into mapping units, called KLBs 2-10 (an acronym for Cretaceous López de Bertodano), with KLB 2 being the oldest, and KLB 10 the youngest. The KLB number of each station was assigned by TMK by georeferencing the latest Geological Map of Seymour Island (Montes et al., 2019) with the station coordinates in GIS.

Data collection:

Data was processed in R Studio, version 2024.09.0

Data quality:

Due to taxonomic uncertainties, all records were coarsened to Family level identifications
