Antarctic Fur Seal foraging trip duration, Bird Island, South Georgia from 1978 onwards

Since 1978, female Antarctic Fur Seal foraging trip duration has been monitored on Bird Island, South Georgia. Each year 20 female Fur Seals are tagged with a VHF transmitter. Disruptions to the transmitter's signal indicate the seal is at sea and thus foraging trip time can be calculated. Data is available for individual seals as well as average, minimum and maximum trip times for each season. This data is collected as part of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources's Marine Debris Programme (CCAMLR CEMP).

Statement

Methodology:

The trip durations of 20 females are recorded each year using small VHF transmitters attached to the seal's fur. When the mother is on land a receiver can hear the signal transmitted by the device and it logs her presence, conversely when she is at sea no signal is heard. From this trip duration can be calculated. Data is available for seals where 6 or more trips were recorded.

All data were collected under permit from the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

All sampling procedures used were regulated by the British Antarctic Survey Ethical Review Committee in collaboration with Cambridge University and the UK Home Office.
