Seismic reflection and refraction shot gathers from Korff Ice Rise, West Antarctica, 2015

In 2015 a 3.7 km long seismic reflection profile was collected along the ice divide at Korff Ice Rise, West Antarctica, aiming to study basal conditions and englacial properties. Additionally, short refraction shot gathers were collected to study firn properties and constrain P-wave velocities in the firn. This dataset consists of the reflection and refraction data as a series of SEG-Y files.

This study is part of the British Antarctic Survey programme Polar Science for Planet Earth. All data were collected with the support of the British Antarctic Survey.

Statement

Methodology:

Reflection profile: Georods were deployed at intervals of 10 m. Receiver spreads were alternately at 30 m offset and split, with the shot point within the spread. Geometry is assigned in SEG-Y headers. No processing has been included. The source was 150 g Pentolite at 20 m depth.

Refraction gathers: Refrac 01 - 48 receivers, 10 m channel interval, 510 m offset. Source: 150 g Pentolite at surface.

Refrac 02 - 48 receivers, 10 m channel interval, 30 m offset. Source: 150 g Pentolite at surface.

Refrac 03 - 48 receivers,'expanding spread' geometry; i.e. channel interval 2.5 m to 390 m, progressively increasing receiver intervals: 2.5 m between 2.5 m and 20 m, 5 m between 20 and 50 m, and 10 m between 50 m and 390 m. The source was a seismic detonator at surface.

Data collection:

Seismic: Recorded on 2 x 24 channel Geometrics Geode with 48 x 40 Hz Georods.

Source:

Reflection: 150 g high explosive shots at 20 m depth.

Refraction: REFRAC_01, REFRAC_02: 150 g Pentolite at surface.

REFRAC_03: seismic detonator at surface.

Resolution:

Reflection: The normal incidence Fresnel zone is less than 80 m (minimum 150 Hz dominant frequency).

Data quality:

Reflection: 8000 Hz sample rate with GPS shot trigger timing; 24 bit recording

Refraction: 16000 Hz sample rate with GPS shot trigger timing
