Planktonic foraminifers were also examined from mudline samples from the top of selected holes. Mudline samples were stained with Rose Bengal to highlight living cells. Sample volumes of approximately 10 or 20 cm3 were washed over 63 ?m sieves. Harder samples were dried at ~40oC overnight before washing in a sediment shaker. Very hard samples were treated with dilute peroxide and/or detergent and some were disaggregated with mortar and pestle. Empty sieves were cleaned in an ultrasonic bath to minimize cross-contamination between samples. Dried residues (>63 ?m) were transferred to labelled glass vials, from which subsamples were examined on metal trays using a binocular stereomicroscope.
